Melatonin is a hormone with antioxidant activity. It is produced by the pineal gland, from which it is synthesised starting from serotonin.

 Melatonin is important for the regulation of the sleep-wake cycle (circadian rhythms), body temperature, sexual maturation and reproduction.

Melatonin production diminishes with age. Its levels are high in infancy, and steadily diminish from puberty to old age.
